As we enter the traditional time of gift giving, it’s always a struggle to come up with something truly distinctive and memorable. In fact, these days the personal touch seems to have gotten lost in a digital age with people trying to save time with online shopping and buying from the same “latest and greatest” gift lists.  This year why not take a more unique approach, consider fine art photography as a new tradition in gift giving - photo collections that capture your own life reflected as art and that can be shared with others as timeless treasures that capture your personal legacy for generations to come.

This year we have created a lovely package for clients that want to celebrate their legacy and create a piece of art that will last for generations to enjoy.  It includes one of our photography sessions here in our Seattle photography studio plus a beautiful 12×16 canvas photograph that we build and make here in the studio.   Our canvas photographs are one of our specialties and something that sets us apart. We print all of our canvas prints here in the studio, then wrap them around hand built frames and finally they are sealed with beautiful handmade paper from Nepal.  I put together this quick video to show you an example of these beautiful canvas photographs.

Our holiday offer is priced at $249.  If you are interested in learning more, please enter your details here and we will be in touch and we would be honored to work with you.

Over the last few months as we have spent more and more time working with clients that are either expecting or have newborn babies we have spent a lot of time listening to them on what they want from us as a Seattle based photography studio.

As a result of that we have just re-launched our newborn and maternity photography sessions.  These packages are designed to capture those watershed moments from the very first days of your babies life all the way up to 18 months when they aren’t a baby anymore but a toddler. Each package includes a photography session and then we have bundled one or more of our beautiful wall art frames;  either classic museum quality frames or our beautiful canvas wraps - all framed here in the studio.

One of the main changes we have made is to provide more flexibility and choice in the frames because we know clients all have different tastes and styles.  Before I felt we were just too rigid in what frames were available in each package. We now also offer a home based newborn session in addition to our regular studio ones.  We know that getting out of the house in those first few weeks is tough so doing them at your home might make better sense assuming you have the room for us to setup lighting etc.  We will also arrange a complimentary consultation before your first session to allow us to get to know you and where we can discuss creative ideas.

If you are expecting or have already had a baby and you might be interested in leaning more about these special photography sessions please check out our newborn area on our web site, here.

We hope to hear from you soon.  Cheers, Phil

After speaking to a couple of clients recently I realized that they weren’t aware that we had our Father’s Day promotion going on right now.   It’s been on the home page of the main photography site for a couple of weeks but I realized that not everyone visits the site frequently unless they are looking for a particular photograph or researching our photography sessions.   One of them was really disappointed as they were looking for a unique gift for their Dad but had already purchased something else.

To try and make sure that this doesn’t happen in the future I’ve started to create an exclusive list of clients and potential clients that have visited our web site or studio that might be interested to hear about our special offers.  In the future whenever we have a special promotion coming up we will send this exclusive list an email before the promotion gets posted to the main site or before the mailers goes out.   In some cases I’m going to create special offers that are only sent to this list.   Knowing that many potential clients visit the site doing research to find a new photographer but aren’t necessary ready to book there and then this might be handy for them as well.   And don’t worry, we won’t email anything more than once a month and will never share your email with anyone else.  To sign-up enter your details here.

Happy Saturday!

I was catching up on some of my reading and came across this article on the RealSimple blog that talks about the benefits of choosing a professional photographer to capture your kids.  Parents are often telling me how much their kids are changing and that the professional photographs that we have made for them are so much better than their own snaps.  It’s not to say that parents shouldn’t keep snapping away, gosh no, just add some professional ones to the mix.

Choosing a professional photographer is often hard because there are so many out there and parents often don’t know how to make a decision.  Last year I wrote up a simple guide for making that choice easier, feel free to check it out here.  If you happen to live in Seattle or the Pacific North West you should definitely check out some of our services to see what we have to offer.

Note To Self
Get Professional Photos of Your Children

Professionalcamera2I’ve never forgotten an invaluable piece of advice that I heard from an older friend right after my first child was born. She told me, “One of my greatest regrets about my children’s childhoods was that I didn’t have more professional pictures taken.”

“You didn’t take many pictures?” I asked.

“I took tons of pictures,” she said, “but the fact is, professional photographs are so much better than even the best snapshots.”

I absolutely agree—professional photos are better. And keeping her advice in mind, ever since my daughters were born, I’ve been zealous about getting their photos taken professionally at least once a year.

While it’s a lot of fun (and also a pain) to take pictures myself, it’s terrific to have some pictures that are truly excellent. These photos don’t take the place of the on-the-spot pictures that I take myself—I still take scads of photos at birthday parties, first days of school, on the slide, with a popsicle—but these pictures memorialize my children’s childhoods in a different way.

Plus they make great family gifts. I can never figure out a good present for the grandparents and great-grandparents, but they always love to get a really great photograph—especially the relatives who don’t often get a chance to see the girls in person.

Also, research shows that one way to boost your happiness is to reflect on happy times, and looking at photographs helps keep memories more vivid.

It’s a splurge, of course. Professional photos aren’t cheap.

However, I figure that the money I spend on these photographs will strengthen family bonds, enhance happy memories, and capture the fleeting moments of childhood. They give me more pleasure than practically any other purchases that I make. That strikes me as pretty good happiness bang for the buck.

A friend’s family had another great photography tradition. For her whole life, at every milestone, her parents took a picture of her and her brother sitting exactly the same way on their front stoop. It’s fascinating to see them change through the years. Along the same lines, the artist Nicholas Nixon took a photograph of his wife and her three sisters once a year for 33 years. The collection of these photographs, The Brown Sisters, is riveting.

Getting professional photos take is a great example of the tiresome fact that happiness takes thought and effort. These photographs are easy to arrange; in the scheme of things, not terribly expensive; contribute greatly to our family happiness—and yet it probably never would have occurred to me to do it if my friend hadn’t suggested it.

Have you ever had your child’s professional photograph taken? Did you think it was worth the expense and trouble?

I was reading this New York Times article Will You Marry Me? Say Cheese! - New York Times a while ago and it got me thinking about this growing trend for couples who want to capture the complete wedding experience.  Obviously there is the wedding day itself and many couples also like to do ‘engagement’ photographs before, but these typically don’t capture that very special moment when someone actually proposes.  So I’ve just launched this new true engagement photography package designed for folks that want to capture the actual moment when you say “Will you marry me?” to your loved one.

No matter if this is something you’ve discussed before or a complete surprise, the moment that you ask the question has to be one of the most wonderfully romantic and intimate moments that you will ever have in your relationship together.

So why let the moment slip by without capturing it on film so that you can have it forever? This is where I can come in. Depending on your plans, I can either arrange to be at your chosen spot or we can work together to select a perfect place that has meaning for you and is ideal for me to grab the action. And don’t worry – I won’t be in your space. I’ll be in stealth mode hiding behind people or setup a long way away using a very long lens. With careful planning, you won’t even know I’m there.

Pricing starts at $300 and depends on your plans and how much setup and time will be required. Each Proposal Package includes your own Web gallery of photographs that will be posted approximately 24 hours after the event that you can send to your friends and family.

If you are planning to pop the question, don’t delay. You can take pictures of your special someone anytime, but the emotion of that once-in-a-lifetime moment is something that you can’t recreate. Complete the form here and let’s start planning.

It’s not unusual for parents who value photography as an art form to have professional photographs taken of their newborn. This package puts a different twist on that idea. It focuses exclusively on capturing your baby when they are their tiniest - during the first 48 hours of your new loved one’s life.

Rather than doing the photography session in our downtown studio, Phil will come to your hospital room within the first 48 hours after you’ve given birth.  Phil spends about an hour or so photographing your new baby and your interactions with the newest member of your family. Then about 24 hours later, he will upload the photographs to your own Web gallery that we can send to family and friends in an announcement email. In addition, you can choose one high resolution photograph to use for a formal announcement card.

Our special Baby’s First 48 hours package is priced at $199
Should you also decide to book one of our other maternity or newborn packages; we will provide an added discount for booking two or more.
If you’d like more information about our Baby’s First 48 Hours Package, then please complete the form here and let’s chat.

Let’s face it. There are hundreds of photographers out there and choosing a photographer is hard and often a leap of faith. It’s not just about how good their photographic skills are. It’s often about how you feel about the experience as a whole. We totally understand this. That’s why we’ve created a special introductory session we call New Thursdays! Where you can try us for the first time with no risk.

We have taken our regular Studio Sessions and created a special day for new clients on Thursdays. The difference is that we are making the traditional $250 session fee complimentary. Yep, that’s right. For new clients on Thursdays, there is no studio fee! It’s your risk-free way to see if you like working with a professional photographer who knows how to combine artistry and authenticity to capture someone’s true spirit on film.

There are no other differences. You will still get the same care and attention to detail in capturing the natural side of a person — a familiar expression, a certain glint in the eye, a beautiful smile, a child’s personality, that look between two people that reflects their true feelings. You’ll also be able to take advantage of our meticulous and unique approach to printing and framing, where we use only museum-quality materials specially designed to stand the test of time.

If you are looking for a new photographer dedicated to providing you with visual treasures that generations will cherish, why not give us a try?

New Thursdays! are priced at $250 $0!   If you are interested in learning more please enter your details here and we will be happy to help.

Thinking up gift ideas for Dad for Father’s Day can be easy. You can always go with a subscription to a sports magazine, a good bottle of wine, golf lessons, or, of course, another necktie to add to his growing collection of things he never wears. But easy doesn’t necessarily mean special, does it? What’s missing from gifts like these is that they’re not unique. They don’t express you or your feelings for Dad.

So we’ve come up with the perfect gift idea that’s truly distinctive and something that only you can offer your dad — a photography session designed especially for him. You and your family are unique in his life. I don’t know of any dad that wouldn’t love to have beautifully composed and framed photographs of his family that he can proudly display at home or at the office. Having your portrait made takes just a little bit of time and planning on your part. But it really shows that you care, and dads just love that.

This year we have put together a great little package for you. We’ve taken our popular Studio Sessions and bundled it together with a framed 8×12 photograph. We then place the photograph in a museum-quality 12×16 black frame. Our studio sessions are normally $250. The photograph and frame combination is normally priced at $280.

To celebrate Father’s Day, we’re offering this entire package for the low price of just $190.

If you haven’t visited us yet at our studio in Seattle, this is the perfect time to come in and try our services and take advantage of these savings. We recently finished this video of Glenn, a Seattle local who did just that last year, and his photographs were a huge hit with his wife and kids. Click on the thumbnail below to watch the short video.

To qualify for this special Father’s Day package, you must book your session before June 14th, 2008, though the actual date of your session can be scheduled for any time afterwards, even after Father’s Day if you like. You can choose to sneak into the studio on your own or with the kids if you want to surprise Dad. Or you can make him part of the fun and have photographs taken of everyone while you’re all here. If you decide to wait until after Father’s Day for your session, we’ll make up an attractive gift card you can give him on his special day.

Unique Fathers Day Gift | The Fine Art Photography Studio Seattle | Presented by Phil Holden

Coming up with special gift ideas for Mother’s Day can be a real challenge. You have so many options out there, from traditional flower arrangements to lovely jewelry to a fancy dinner out at a great restaurant. And of course there’s always chocolate — in every shape and size. These gifts are appreciated, but something’s missing. They’re not a unique expression of you or your feelings.

So we’ve created a perfect Mother’s Day gift that’s truly distinctive and one that only you can offer your mum — a photography session designed especially for her. You and your family are unique in her life. I don’t know of any mum that wouldn’t love to have beautifully composed and framed photographs of her family that she can hang on her walls. Having your portrait made takes just a little bit of time and planning on your part. But it really shows that you care, and mums just love that.

This year we have put together a great little package for you. We’ve taken our popular Studio Sessions and bundled it together with a framed 8×12 photograph. To celebrate Mother’s Day we are offering both of these together for the low price of $190.00.

Unique Mothers Day Gift | The Fine Art Photography Studio Seattle | Presented by Phil Holden

With the new year upon us many people are using this time to take a fresh look at their business and update their plans and marketing.  As such we have been getting a few inquires recently from folks looking to create some new head shots that they can use on both their traditional marketing as well as their online marketing.  Last week we got to meet and spend some time with Angelica Spates who is a real estate professional that serves the Seattle and Fauntleroy areas.  I have to say one of the things that I love about having the business is all the new people and interesting conversations that get into.  Angelica was one session that I especially enjoyed spending some time with.  Here are a couple of the proofs from our time together.

No matter how long you have been in your relationship with Valentines around the corner its a time to take a few moments to reflect on your love and think about how much that person means to you.  And if you are looking for a unique gift this year for that someone special that is more personal than a bracelet or some other purchased item then why not consider a gift of fine art photography?

We have been working on putting together a new promotion for the Valentines season that I wanted to let people know about.  Basically we have included our Studio Session with one of our beautiful wrapped canvas photographs and then this really cute Coach key-ring in one package for just $350.

And especially for you married folks out there, when was the last time you had professional photographs taken of you two?  Many people I ask answer that question with just two words ‘my wedding’!   Seriously, what better time to capture your love on film than now.   Interested in getting more details then click here

The first weeks with your new baby are truly remarkable and unforgettable. There is nothing quite like that newborn stage with those wrinkles and dimples and your baby’s soft skin. The best time to capture photographs of your newborn is within the first 4 weeks because that’s when they are smallest.   Naked babies make the most precious photographs, but you’ll want some versatile photographs as well. So, bring your favorite baby outfit - or three!

The Newborn Package typically takes place in our photography studio in downtown Seattle, but we know it’s often easier to do it at your home so we are happy to do that assuming that travel is reasonable. We’ll make sure to schedule plenty of time to allow for feeding and changing and for you to savor the experience with your newborn. Your partner, other children and family are welcome and encouraged to accompany you to the session and create some great baby’s first family photographs.

At this time we are offering a special introductory rate of $99 for our newborn package.

The introductory package includes an extended length photography session and a photographic slideshow of you and your newborn baby that we will upload to our website and then email to you and your family.  In addition, if you purchase one of our recommended fine art wall portraits when you book your newborn baby package we have special pricing available to help you celebrate your new arrival.

We have a few different frames for you to choose from.  A 16×24″ canvas wrapped photograph, or a 20×26″ classic museum gallery style frame, or a 20×24″ classic museum gallery style frame with a twist - it displays 4 square photographs.  Each of these wonderful framed pieces are priced at just $375 each when they are pre purchased.  This is a savings of at least $200.

Should you also decide to book one of our maternity packages or other baby packages, we will provide you an additional discount for booking two or more.
