It’s well and truly dark this morning so I thought I would post a fun colorful photograph to counter those winter blues. This one was taken a little while ago and I just finished preparing a beautiful canvas photograph of this for the studio as one of our new studio samples. There is something that I just love about the energy and color in this. Such a fun way to start the morning!
One of the many visitors we had last weekend in our photography studio here in Seattle was this completely adorable young couple and their two children. They came via my good friend Mark Eskenazi who is another professional photographer here in Seattle. He had asked me if they could schedule a session here as he wasn’t able to shoot them right away and I was delighted to help.
Here are a few quick previews for them to see of Mum with their beautiful baby daughter. I’m looking forward to getting them back into the studio to show them the complete set of proofs.
This Saturday one of the sessions that we had in our photography studio here in Seattle was of baby Noah. If you have visited this blog before you might recognize him and Mum as we have been photographing him since he was two weeks old. I especially love working with clients during their babies first year or eighteen months growth, its just so much fun to watch them grow and become toddlers right before our eyes. And of course the babies relax more as they come back to a familiar environment.
Here are three fun shots of the growing young man hanging onto Mum.
I have been wanting to blog these photographs for a while. They were taken in our photography studio in Seattle and show some of the fun that we frequently have in our studio. Just a brother and his younger sister goofing around and having fun with me working away to capture many of those magic and funny moments. I just love the energy within these frames and how it captures that developing relationship.
A couple of weeks ago I got the chance to photograph an exciting new children’s gym in Redmond. Great Play core concept is based around kids having lots of fun while at the same time developing a love of physical activity that will lead to lifetime of different activities. The Great Play concept first started in Stamford, CT but now the greater Seattle area has one for themselves, opened by Marie Maxwell in Redmond.
When Marie asked me to come in to photograph her new gym I jumped at the chance, although I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Over the years I have been to a number of children’s gym’s, but they are normally focused on one or two sports. Marie’s Redmond gym is very different and unique. Great Play’s classes are filled with fun interactive and different exercises that are developed specifically for a child’s age to develop their movement and motor skills. One of the obviously things that you notice is that the gym is very high tech to enhance the experience for the kids. The wall’s are basically huge screen’s and then projectors display different scene’s and fun characters that the kids just love. What I find great about this concept is that as I watched the kids enjoying themselves you could actually see them become much more confident as they did things that they didn’t think they could. I put together a quick video slide show some of the fun the kids have plus lots of photo’s, just click on the thumbnail below.
All in all a great fun morning, I had a blast but must admit that I was pretty exhausted afterwards as I ran around trying to capture these young kids who were full of energy. I’ve added a small collection of many of the photographs that I captured that day below so you can see them as well.
Cheers

Last week was Anne’s birthday and to celebrate it she decided that we should take her photograph while she was in our photography studio here in Seattle. Taking photographs might seem a normal thing for us to do, but in the few weeks that Anne has been with us she has refused to have her photograph taken. It’s something that Nicole and I often tease her about.
So, you can imagine how surprised Nicole and I were when Anne walked in on her birthday saying that she wanted her photograph taken. Not surprisingly we were busy working on various holiday photograph projects and the day was close to an end and we still hadn’t taken her photograph, so she pulls on her cool Pea Coat and insisted we take her photograph before she left that day! I used two single lights on one side to give her a more moody look and let the shadow work its magic on the other side.
When I was looking at these there was something that reminded me of the iconic James Dean photographs taken by Dennis Stock many years ago. Yeah, I realize its a bit of a stretch but the cool Pea Coat got me thinking. I ended up processing these with some heavy toning to create an older look for these. All in all I quite like these, I hope Anne will.
A few days ago I got the chance to sit down with Suzanne to review their proofs from our recent photo session in our Seattle photography studio. We managed to get a nice manageable number for her to take home to show Frank. These three were a few of our favorites and I thought I would post them quickly for them before I start my day.
I have to say that I love Olivia’s beautiful red cowboy boots. I’m a big fan of cowboy boots and with the fall weather arriving I have been wearing mine much more frequently. Believe it or not I had my eye on a pair of red ones as well, all be it a bit darker leather. But I’m saddened to report that when I went to the store to buy them they were sold out and had switched suppliers. Ms Olivia’s red pair here were actually a gift from her much older brother, how cool is that! Such a lucky young lady.
As we enter the traditional time of gift giving, it’s always a struggle to come up with something truly distinctive and memorable. In fact, these days the personal touch seems to have gotten lost in a digital age with people trying to save time with online shopping and buying from the same “latest and greatest” gift lists. This year why not take a more unique approach, consider fine art photography as a new tradition in gift giving - photo collections that capture your own life reflected as art and that can be shared with others as timeless treasures that capture your personal legacy for generations to come.
This year we have created a lovely package for clients that want to celebrate their legacy and create a piece of art that will last for generations to enjoy. It includes one of our photography sessions here in our Seattle photography studio plus a beautiful 12×16 canvas photograph that we build and make here in the studio. Our canvas photographs are one of our specialties and something that sets us apart. We print all of our canvas prints here in the studio, then wrap them around hand built frames and finally they are sealed with beautiful handmade paper from Nepal. I put together this quick video to show you an example of these beautiful canvas photographs.
Our holiday offer is priced at $249. If you are interested in learning more, please enter your details here and we will be in touch and we would be honored to work with you.
Earlier today I got the chance to sit down with Mum and Dad and review a number of photographs of these beautiful baby twin girls. These photographs were taken last week in our photography studio in Seattle and we combined the session with casual clothing, Halloween outfits and of course Holiday photographs, one of which that I’m almost certain is going to end up being sent out as a very cool and fun holiday card.
Here’s a quick preview of two photographs of the fun and lovely Halloween outfits. Just so much fun!
I just finished up with uploading some additional previews of another recent Holiday Photography session that we had last week in our photography studio here in Seattle. This time it’s Shelley, who not only brought her two beautiful children, but they brought their lovely black Labrador dogs. Oh my gosh, did we have so much fun! We started out photographing just the kids, then Mum joined us for a while and it wasn’t long before we had all five of them rolling around the studio having fun. We are excited to get Shelley in to see the complete round of proofs, but until then here is a sneak peak for her and her crew.
I’ve also created this mini video of some of the out-takes from our session together. Anne is doing a great job at capturing some video footage of our sessions, there is a funny clip in here where the young puppy covers me with kisses while I’m trying to get the kids to turn around. Funny. Click on the thumbnail below to see the short clip plus these slides.
This last week, not surprisingly we have been very busy with holiday photography sessions here in our photography studio in Seattle. Although we are still in October (just) the holiday’s are not far away so if you haven’t booked a holiday photography session yet there is still time so please get in contact soon. I realize that holiday photo’s are often stressful, however we pride ourselves on creating a relaxed atmosphere so that you can have some fun and get some great shots.
Here are a few photographs from Anna’s crew of boys for them to check out! Looking forward to seeing you guys soon so that we can review all the proofs. Thanks for such a fun session!
I also put together this quick video of some of the out-takes from the fun session that we had and added the photography set to a fun music track. Click on the thumbnail below to see some of the action.
I was talking to a client yesterday and she wanted to know if she could bring her two kids by the studio this coming week in their Halloween costume and I told her of course! That made me realize that maybe I should put together a quick Halloween promotion for this week. So, if you and/or your kids are getting dressed up this week, why not schedule a quick mini photography session with us in our photography studio here in Seattle. Pets and boyfriends welcome too!
The mini sessions are shorter than our typical sessions and last between 20 to 30 minutes and cost just $99 for the session, plus you get to choose two 5×7’s photographs, printed here in our studio. These sessions are designed to be nice and short, but still capture some totally fun photo’s of your crew in their wonderful outfits. We will also give you electronic copies of the prints you choose so you can send to friends and family or upload to Facebook etc If you haven’t been to our studio recently - or ever, this might be an ideal chance to check us out.
Tomorrow we get the chance to sit down with a new Mum to review the photographs of their beautiful newborn baby daughter that we took in our photography studio here in Seattle. As I finish off preparing the proofs for her review I thought I would post a few for Sarah and Kevin to see in advance of the visit.
This sequence of these four shots when she was hanging out on Sarah’s shoulder caught my attention. The expressions in her face with their bright and alert eyes were priceless. And who could resist the little bubbles that she was blowing!
We just sent out our quarterly newsletter that contained the latest updates from our photography studio here in Seattle. I worked with Heather Musil from Little Bird Web Design & Development to create a new design that I felt reflected our studio and the work we do here. We wanted a simple and classic design, yet something that stands out amongst the huge amount of emails that we get and something that obviously highlights the photography.
Since I sent it out a couple of weeks ago I’ve received heaps of compliments from folks that really like the design. I just found out that it was selected to be highlighted by the company we use to send the emails for its simple and effective design, especially the left hand column with its row of smaller photographs. If you are a business and want to create a unique design for your marketing I can highly recommend Heather, she does great designs and really easy to work with.
We are putting the last finishing touches to this fun project. We got the chance to meet this simply beautiful young lady a while ago when she came in for her first photography session with us in our Seattle photography studio. It was her first birthday and Mum wanting some photographs of her to celebrate the occasion. After chatting with Mum we decided to work on both classic shots and then some completely fun ones with her and a birthday cake that she completely tore apart after a while.
The shot above was one of Tim’s favorite’s of his two girls and it completely show’s their relationship and the love between them. We are framing this one for his office. We also just put together a little slide show of some of our favorites from the session plus some video footage that we shot of the session. Click on the thumbnail below to check out what fun we can have in our photography studio here in Seattle.
Trevin: Sorry I missed out on assisting with this shoot! I absolutely love the shots you posted, especially the third one with the flower petals on the ground.
On Safari with Oldupai George: Our photographer for the wedding (Phil Holden, great guy) came by the house last week to watch us interact (or something)… he posted a few of the shots from that on his blog. You can check them out here.
Sheryl: Phil, this just turned out great. Kaitlin and Kaleb had a good time in your studio and particularly loved playing street musicians alongside their faithful hound. They were so excited to present this canvas to their dad, and his reaction did not disappoint. He loved it! Thanks for bringing out my kids’ personalities in many different ways (you actually got teens to smile in many of the other shots!) and thanks for helping us capture this important stage in their lives. Sheryl
Steve: Phil - I love the picture! This is one of the best father’s day gifts I have ever received. Thanks so much for working w/ Sheryl & the kids (& dog) to make this turn out so well.

DG Haldeman: The baby pictures I love, would have to be feet. I love seeing the babies feet with it’s moms or dads. Lots of white and light ‘pure’ colors are fun with babies. you could do some dark colors just to play with it. and I agree, yawning babies are the cutest! Love the pics too though.
Robin Troy: I’m feeling lucky to have stumbled upon your blog. Your work is lovely; your writing, moving. Thanks for bringing beauty into the world. I look forward to seeing more of your future work. Cheers! RT
Jahnina: Nice idea! The movie meetings reminded me and my Czech friends. We are trying to meet once a week for Czech movies. But we are just three so I wouldn’t have as many silly faces as you do.

/i: sorry if i broke your computer screens. Actually phili, the first one is probably my second favourite photo you have ever take on me. There are about 300 of the twins & Mel that rank higher, but that first one is pretty cool. /i
Karen Boehm: Thank you, Phil for capturing the absolute essence of this marvelous little guy. I’m the other grandma. Ryan is our first and we think he’s quite marvelous. The photos here show that to perfection. Grandma Karen
