Look at this completely adorable young man. These were taken in our photography studio here in Seattle and I just got finished reviewing all of the proofs and I thought I would post a couple for Mum and Dad to see. He was such a character and so incredibly happy and having a complete laugh for the whole time. Mum and Dad have just recently moved to Seattle and this was the first time coming into our studio and it was lovely to hang out with them for a while.
As the kids get older one of the best things has to be watching their relationship grow and evolve. Between the games, the laughter, the play fights and of course the occasional tears at its core is their relationship as siblings which is surrounded by love, support and admiration for each other. Of course parents see this all the time and often when I talk to them before our sessions one of the top requests that I often get is that they want me to capture that relationship which is so special. I feel honored to be asked to take on such an important task and it’s especially pleasing when clients come back into the studio to review the proofs and they feel like I did just that. Here we have Neha and her younger brother Aman and its the photograph that we all agreed was the one that showed their relationship in a single print.
Here in the United States it’s Mother’s Day so in honor of those amazing ladies here’s a quick post with two lovely mother’s with their newborn son and grandson taken about a week ago here in our photography studio in Seattle. A completely lovely photography session and very relaxing. It’s amazing to see Noah’s growth since our first session together about a month or so ago.
It’s been close to two years since my last photography show and since that time I have been mostly focusing my photographic work on my life studies and opening the photography studio. Now it’s time to put some time and energy into the other side of my artist life and I’m pleased to announce that I have a show coming up in Seattle and I would love for you to come to the opening night.
I decided against defining the show. Some might call them landscapes, yet others mine say there were more abstract pieces. No matter what you call them you can expect to see is lots of color, water and movement. Some were taken in faraway places such as Japan and Europe, yet true to my own last two years many were taken here in the Pacific North West which maybe represents a renewed love for the place that I call home these days. As someone that is always experimenting with new ways to present my work I have found a new process for this show and all of the photographs are printed and displayed on aluminum sheets of metal which really adds additional depth to the work. These are then hung slightly away from the wall creating a modern and contemporary look.
Once again I’m extremely grateful to the good folks at Kuhlman for hosting the show. The opening night is Friday the 16th May, 7.30pm (Note: this is one week later than my original date) and we should be there until 9.30 or 10ish. If you have never been to Kuhlman its a totally fun & funky clothing store with some fabulous clothing lines and accessories which I bet you will like. I would love for you to come join me and check out my latest work and enjoy some snacks and have a drink.
As for the show title, that will become obvious once you see the work.
If I have forgotten anyway feel free to forward and of course guests are welcome, Phil
Two boys, neither of them not exactly very happy about having their photographs taken. One was just simply cranky at the whole concept and the other insisted on making silly faces for much of the time and was far from being himself. My approach is always to let them play, let them be boys and with a bit of luck gradually they forget about where they are for a little while. Here are three of my favorites from a recent photography session in the studio that I just got done finishing printing.
I’m not sure if it was that song ‘Women of Today’ that I listened to yesterday which got lodged into my brain and wouldn’t leave, or maybe its because I have been meeting a bunch of mother’s recently who have been visiting our photography studio here in Seattle for their Mother’s Day session - most likely a combination of both I would guess.
Both reminded me that I needed to do something about it, so to celebrate Mother’s Day and women in general I decided to put together a photo slide-show today of some of my favorite photographs of women taken over the last year or so. In here you will find newborn baby girls, young ladies, mothers, sisters, models, executives, dancers, friends, grandma’s and just about everything in-between I think!
The music, a lovely upbeat song by the talented musician Faith Rivera is titled Women of Today and creates a nice 3 minute distraction if you have a few minutes to sit back and enjoy. Click on the center of the thumbnail below. Here’s to you ladies!
BTW, it’s still not too late to book your Mother’s Day photography session if you are looking for a unusual gift this year. Details here.
Just a quick post as I have been slacking on that this week. This tired young man was from the baby photography session that we did today in our Seattle photography studio. This was right at the end of our time together after a couple of feeds, multiple outfits and many different positions. By the end of it he was completely warn out, but hardly a single cry for the whole time and he’s not normally a fan of changing outfits. It times like this that I get to feel so special and fortunate with my job when I get to hang out with little guys like this along with his lovely mother and grandma who has him in this picture.
Today started for me at 6am and I have been on the go ever since with one remaining client phone call next. Seeing as I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast I’m going to run out after that and treat myself to an early super - yeah!
Trevin: Sorry I missed out on assisting with this shoot! I absolutely love the shots you posted, especially the third one with the flower petals on the ground.
On Safari with Oldupai George: Our photographer for the wedding (Phil Holden, great guy) came by the house last week to watch us interact (or something)… he posted a few of the shots from that on his blog. You can check them out here.
Sheryl: Phil, this just turned out great. Kaitlin and Kaleb had a good time in your studio and particularly loved playing street musicians alongside their faithful hound. They were so excited to present this canvas to their dad, and his reaction did not disappoint. He loved it! Thanks for bringing out my kids’ personalities in many different ways (you actually got teens to smile in many of the other shots!) and thanks for helping us capture this important stage in their lives. Sheryl
Steve: Phil - I love the picture! This is one of the best father’s day gifts I have ever received. Thanks so much for working w/ Sheryl & the kids (& dog) to make this turn out so well.

DG Haldeman: The baby pictures I love, would have to be feet. I love seeing the babies feet with it’s moms or dads. Lots of white and light ‘pure’ colors are fun with babies. you could do some dark colors just to play with it. and I agree, yawning babies are the cutest! Love the pics too though.
Robin Troy: I’m feeling lucky to have stumbled upon your blog. Your work is lovely; your writing, moving. Thanks for bringing beauty into the world. I look forward to seeing more of your future work. Cheers! RT
Jahnina: Nice idea! The movie meetings reminded me and my Czech friends. We are trying to meet once a week for Czech movies. But we are just three so I wouldn’t have as many silly faces as you do.
